My career story as a Territory Sales Manager at Data#3

David Gill
Territory Sales Manager, Data#3

If you’d told me that when I left school, I’d one day be leading a team in the tech industry, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. My career hasn’t followed a traditional path, but it’s been one built on growth, people, and purpose.

I started my professional life in the military, where I served for almost a decade. It was a formative time that instilled in me a sense of discipline, resilience, and the value of teamwork. When it was time to transition, I wasn’t quite sure what would come next. A recruiter encouraged me to explore the tech sector, and that one suggestion ended up changing the course of my life.

Starting at the beginning

My first role in the industry was in a warehouse at a tech company. It was hands-on and entry-level, but it gave me a crucial foothold in a world I knew very little about. That opportunity led to a junior sales position and, not long after, my first role at Data#3 as a Customer Service Representative.

Over the next seven years, I worked across several roles at Data#3. Those years were foundational for me. I was constantly learning and surrounded by experienced people in various roles who were generous with their time and knowledge. With every new challenge, I gained more confidence and capability.

A pivotal moment came when I stepped into a sales role. Visiting customers and seeing the impact of our solutions firsthand changed my perspective. I realised I wasn’t just selling products; I was solving real problems and making a difference. That sense of purpose still drives me today. What excites me most is working with good people on complex challenges and ultimately achieving goals together.

Leaving to learn, returning with purpose

After seven years, I stepped away from Data#3 to explore new opportunities. I worked for both a large Australian company and a multinational organisation. It was valuable time spent broadening my perspective and learning different approaches to sales and leadership.

But no matter where I went, the culture and people at Data#3 stayed with me. I always felt connected, and when the opportunity came to return, it felt like the right move, both personally and professionally.

Returning to Data#3 really did feel like coming home. While the business had grown and evolved, the same core values were still at its heart: Honesty, Excellence, Agility, Respect, and Teamwork. From day one, the support was incredible. A structured onboarding plan, a dedicated buddy, and a manager who made sure I had everything I needed to succeed, made all the difference.

Leading and enabling others

Today, I lead a team as Territory Sales Manager. My role is about creating the conditions for others to thrive. I see myself as someone who clears the path for my team so they can do what they do best—help our customers achieve great things with innovative technology.

When they succeed, Data#3 succeeds, and our customers succeed. I’m passionate about supporting their growth, celebrating their wins, and helping them tackle the challenges that come with a fast-paced, evolving industry. Seeing others grow and knowing I’ve played a part in their development is the most rewarding part of the job.

Coming full circle

If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout my career, it’s that growth doesn’t always follow a straight line. Some of the most valuable lessons come from stepping outside your comfort zone or stepping away and returning with fresh perspective.

Data#3 has given me the space to do both. It’s a place that values people, encourages continuous learning, and supports your development at every stage. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for your next big opportunity, there’s real potential here, if you’re willing to lean in and take it.

As I look ahead, I’m energised by the opportunities on the horizon, for my team, for our customers, and for the industry. Technology is moving quickly, the challenges are more complex, and the stakes are higher, but that only makes the wins more meaningful.

I’ve come full circle in my journey with Data#3, and I’m proud of the path I’ve taken. If my story encourages even one person to explore what’s possible, here or elsewhere, then it’s been worth sharing.
